So much can be said about "Man's Best Friend." Domesticated about 15,000 years ago, dogs are the most popular pet in America, with nearly 40% of U.S. households owning at least one dog. Dogs are intelligent, playful, loyal companions, happy to share the company of humans. Dogs are not difficult pets to keep, but they do require a serious commitment on the owner's part. As pack animals, dogs are very social and require the companionship of other dogs or people. If left alone frequently for long periods of time, undesirable habits often result; such as excessive barking, chewing, digging, and escaping from the yard. Dogs need daily exercise and walks outside the confines of the yard, a healthy diet, vaccinations and wellness exams.
